They’re resilient survivors and devoted parents, but so often, they’re denied something all animals deserve: kindness.

When a severely injured crocodile was found on the banks of a river in Costa Rica after being shot, he made headlines around the world. His story challenged the way many people think about crocodiles, showing them that these animals – like all animals – are individuals, deserving of respect, dignity, and compassion.

Here are four facts about crocodiles that might surprise you…

1. Crocodiles communicate before they’re born

Crocodile hatchlings begin communicating from inside the egg! With high-pitched chirps and grunts, they signal to their siblings that it’s time to hatch together, and let their mum know it’s time to uncover the nest. This early vocalisation shows just how connected these animals are from the very beginning.

2. They are devoted mums

Female crocodiles are dedicated mothers who stand guard over their nests for months. When their young emerge from their shells, they gently carry their tiny babies in their mouths down to a “nursery” in the water, protecting them during their most vulnerable early days and throughout the first months of their lives.

3. They’ve been around since dinosaurs roamed Earth

Crocodiles have roamed this planet for more than 200 million years. They coexisted with the dinosaurs and outlived them, adapting through dramatic shifts in climate and landscape, and continue to share the riverways and banks today.

4. They are farmed in Australian crocodile factory farms

Few people realise that crocodiles are farmed for their skin. Investigations into Australia’s crocodile factory farms have revealed thousands of native crocodiles confined to barren cells, forced to spend their unnaturally short lives in deprivation, before being killed in unimaginable ways.

In the wild, they can live for up to 70 years, but they are slaughtered at just two or three years old, all so their skins can be turned into handbags and shoes for so-called ‘luxury’ brands.
