Gold Coast bid to ban rodeo cruelty fails

1 November 2011 Have your say

The Gold Coast City Council failed to protect animals from rodeo cruelty when it defeated Mayor Ron Clarke's motion to ban rodeo events at it's meeting yesterday.

In a council meeting two weeks ago, Mayor Ron Clarke introduced a resolution that would exclude rodeos and other competitions involving cruelty to animals from future events organised or subsidised by the GCCC, but only 4 out of 13 councillors voted in favour at yesterday's meeting.

In a feisty debate that lasted an hour and a half, several motions and amendments were introduced and some councillors even considered walking out when Mayor Clarke wanted to show a video depicting rodeo cruelty.

Eventually a motion was passed that does not ban rodeos from Council events, but that requests the Qld State Government to develop their planned draft enforceable rodeo Standards as soon as possible — a weak compromise that will not prevent animal suffering in rodeos. However in better news, an annual rodeo held as part of the council's Australia Day celebrations — in which a horse died last year — will be discontinued.

Rodeos are a cruel 'sport' in which bulls, calves and horses are abused for human entertainment. Animals are physically provoked into displaying 'wild' behaviour with flank straps that pull tightly around the animals' sensitive organs causing them to violently 'buck'. Due to the undeniable cruelty, rodeos are completely banned in Britain and in parts of Europe and the United States — but not in Australia. Click here to learn more about rodeos in Australia.

You can help!

Please pledge to say 'NO' to rodeos, and please also send a thank you message to Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke, recipient of Animals Australia's inaugural Compassionate Citizen Award, councillor Robert La Castra, councillor John Wayne and councillor Daphne McDonald for speaking up against rodeo cruelty.

Amanda L: Sick bastards Monday, 21 November 2011 at 11:00pm
Quite simply rodeos are for Country Hicks & Bogans, They love eating meat treating animals cruelly on farms & seeing them suffer, so going to a Rodeo is a form of "Sick" entertainment for these bastards.
Rachel Radic: Stay positive... Sunday, 20 November 2011 at 1:23pm
Just so shameful. What a disappointment. ANOTHER one!!! But let's try and keep positive. If Britain and some parts of America and Europe have banned rodeos completely then there IS hope for Australia. I think it's really important to send thank you emails to the councillors who did show their support, and let's keep fighting the good fight people!!! God bless animals everywhere! xxx

Tony Rawnsley: E-mail to Gold Coast City Council Thursday, 17 November 2011 at 8:47am
Here is a copy of the e-mail I have just sent to the Council:

Regarding the vote on Rodeos. Appalling decision on your part not to take the opportunity to ban this cruel sport once and for all. Very much against the times. It goes against your own vision which suggests that you are to 'celebrate nature' and ensure 'wellbeing for all'. Since when does condoning of cruelty to animals 'celebrate nature'? Since when does condoning cruelty to animals ensure 'wellbeing' for all? How can you ignore the fact that other (more civilised) countries have banned this sport because of its inherent cruelty? To suggest that the animals 'enjoy' the experience is like saying that a woman 'enjoys' being raped. It is utter arrogant nonsense. Shame on you. Shame on the people of the Gold Coast for voting you into council and supporting you. Profiteering on the back of animal cruelty is unforgiveable. You do not deserve to be leaders of any community. You of course will have to change your ways in the end. The good people of this country will prevail. Your support for this cause is doomed in the longer term. In the meantime, how many more animals must suffer because of your selfish ignorance? SHAME ON YOU!

Beef Central is just so much slaughter of cattle what can we do to help.Everyone write to farmers who breed these cattle and complain to them.Just go to beef central and look around. The cattle are beautiful and healthy what a shocking thing to do to them in the end.Stop breeding these lovely animals for slaughter

Val: Short note Monday, 14 November 2011 at 4:06pm
I put 1 in as no one would tell me what it is.Sometimes i really get mad at people who hurt the innocent and it might be best if i put initials. How about that woman who has beef cattle saying the bull should leave her alone .She was hurt by a bull and i know she deserved it.Sorry but you don't play around with bulls. One nearly killed me when i was young as i ran across a paddock.
Val: Bobby calves Monday, 14 November 2011 at 11:12am
I saw the bobbys in the paper on Saturday.I signed up to go on beef central.I wonder  why you farmers out there don't stop eating Beef and veal etc etc The list is endless.I am not sure who in my family still do .I never tell people not to as i was brought up on farm.I was born in S.A. and would like to see it now.
Val: Circuses Monday, 14 November 2011 at 5:29am
I went through to the circus. It would be so easy to tick the line if you were not looking properly but i was.Animals should be banned from circuses.I saw the elephant who was kicked and that is bad.
Val: Camels and Rodeoes Monday, 14 November 2011 at 5:23am
Rodeoes should be banned.I would love to go to Tamworth with a friend but i will not go if there is vicious rodeoes.I know Tommy Emmanuel is signing autographs there.I might write to him and ask if he agrees with rodeoes. If he doesn't he should sign autographs somewhere else.It would serve Tamworth  right.Where can i wite to him.We all can.I am tired and will go now.
Val: Rodeoes Monday, 14 November 2011 at 5:11am
I gave up tonight with this darned flu.The animals can't though.I went to sleep after i heard my song .What was the lady saying on The Way We Were tonight.Ifelt ill.The only thing i did hear was the comment about there being too many camels and culling them. That is beyond belief to leave animals in a lingering death after being shot. The camels have to be looked after,I wrote to NT about this to the Police Commisioner.
Marina Petsava, Sweden: Rodeo " bravery" Saturday, 12 November 2011 at 10:44am
What´s the purpose of treated calves in Rodeos   this way?

Is this a good way  for them to show us their bravery or their barbarism?

By stressed a little calv, put it down, beating and binding it, it is not bravey!

I ask  the Australian Authorities to stop  any cruelty on animals! at once, not  tomorrow!
