The Northern Territory buffalo industry says no animals have been exported to Indonesia since last year's live export shutdown.
Prior to the suspension, 3,000 buffalo a year were being exported from the Northern Territory, with a vision to increase that figure to 10,000.
Buffalo Industry Council vice-president Michael Swart says an increase in the use of stunning devices in Indonesian abattoirs is to blame.
"We know it's too hard to stun a buffalo and for that reason that they're not taking them," he said.
"The front of their skull, the bone, is very thick, so yeah, it's a lot harder to use a captive bold type stunner.
"It's something we've got to research further. We were looking at some electric stunners."
