Bill to end live sheep trade 5 votes closer to passing!

Every single MP elected at recent by-elections supports an end to cruel live sheep exports

LAST UPDATED: 7 August 2018

An end to the cruel live sheep export industry is closer than ever thanks to the results of the much-anticipated ‘Super-Saturday By-elections’. Five new MPs will be sworn in to the Federal parliament in mid-August and each of them will cast a crucial vote in support of an historic bill that will bring to an end Australia’s cruellest trade.

The suffering of sheep at sea has been a hot political issue since shocking footage was exposed on 60 Minutes almost four months ago. And voters ensured these animals remained front of mind during recent by-elections in South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, and Western Australia.

Reflecting on her re-election in the South Australian electorate of Mayo, key cross-bencher Rebekha Sharkie from the Centre Alliance told the media that live export was one of her top priorities. Re-elected Labor MP in the seat of Fremantle in WA, Josh Wilson, also confirmed one of his two key priorities is securing a transition away from live sheep exports.

Finally we are seeing political momentum for animals! 5 out of 5 MPs elected last Saturday will echo the wishes of the vast majority of Australians when they get the chance to vote to end live sheep export.
