We asked people to watch something most people have never seen. Here’s what happened.

Did seeing meat move shock you too? We don’t often get to see meat that’s this ‘fresh’. As a society, we’ve hidden from view the process that takes an individual and turns his or her body into our meal. Animals go into slaughterhouses, meat comes out and what happens in between we don’t like to think about. But, it gets harder to ignore the individual who once was when the last flickers of life are still seemingly pulsing through their flesh.

As disturbing as twitching nerve endings are, there’s more to know about meat … and it’s equally unsettling:

  • Animal agriculture is one of the most significant contributors to global warming — more than all of the world’s transport.
  • Nearly 80% of the land cleared in the Amazon is used for cattle grazing.
  • Scientists predict that at current fishing rates, the ocean’s fish populations could collapse by 2050.
  • Animals consume 6 times more food than they produce. The plant protein consumed by farm animals could feed around 3 billion people.
  • 4 out of 5 portions of raw chicken meat in Australia are contaminated with intestinal bacteria that could cause food poisoning.
  • More than half of all antibiotics are used on farmed animals — increasing the risk of antibiotic resistant superbugs.
  • The World Cancer Research Fund rates processed meats as a group 1 carcinogen, alongside cigarettes and asbestos.

On top of all that, most animals killed for meat live in places like this:
