Every election can be a catalyst for change for animals and that’s especially the case this year as this Federal election will also decide the future of the live sheep export trade.
That’s because the Australian Labor Party has confirmed that they will end live sheep export if elected on May 21.
It’s only the second time in the history of this decades-long trade that a party capable of forming government has promised to bring it to an end.
And the justification for Labor’s policy position could not be more compelling:
- Most Australian farmers don’t live export and most of those who do, do not solely rely on the trade
- Most Australians – including Western Australians – support a phase out of the trade
- Most economic reports commissioned into the trade conclude that ending it would create jobs and be better for the economy
- No amount of regulation has ever stemmed the animal cruelty inherent to the trade
