Arnie says we should all be doing it.

Billions of animals could be spared thanks to a ground-breaking initiative by the Chinese government. China aims to halve its citizen’s meat consumption! With animal agriculture contributing more to global warming than the world’s transport, China have asserted themselves as a world leader on this global issue. Changes to the nation’s dietary guidelines have the potential to reduce China’s emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030 — more than the UK and Australia combined!

As well as tackling climate change, the Chinese government hope to tackle some of the country’s major health concerns. High meat consumption has been linked to four of the major killers — heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity. These four health issues are responsible for 85% of deaths in China.

Teaming up with actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron, the government has prepared a series of public information ads encouraging Chinese people to eat less meat. Cameron and Schwarzenegger, who says he feels fantastic after cutting back on meat, hope that this message will reach a global audience as protecting the environment is the responsibility of all of us.

We have to see the world as one world, that we're all participants in.

Director

As well as improving public health, the environmental organisation WildAid have calculated that by achieving their meat reduction target, China will cut global agriculture emissions by 22%! Imagine if the whole world did this …

China currently consumes 28% of the world’s meat. However, the average person in China consumes much less meat than in more than a dozen other countries. In fact, when it comes to who eats the most meat per person, Australia takes the lead.

Australians can’t afford to wait for our government to take action. And many of us aren’t! 1 in 4 Australians are already choosing to reduce their meat consumption, or cut it out altogether. As individuals, we can join China in taking a stand for our planet — and for our health. As an added bonus, every time we choose meat and dairy-free, we spare the lives of animals like Frank.

And Wombat. And Autumn. And Bea.
