Urge state leaders to free hens from cages – and sooner than 2036.

Over a decade more is a decade too long

One year has passed since the agreement to phase out battery cages, yet this crucial change hasn't been 'locked in'. It’s time to urge state Agriculture Ministers to not only confirm an end date, but to accelerate the timeline for freeing hens from cages. NOTE: Letters in your own words will be most powerful for hens.

After a lengthy eight-year-long review process, Australian Agriculture Ministers finally agreed to ban battery cages – by 2036. Despite their clear commitment, little progress has been made in legally solidifying this ban.

Every year that state governments allow hens to be confined in battery cages subjects millions more of these naturally inquisitive animals to painful lives of deprivation.

Every waking minute of their lives, they peer through the same cage bars, only to see row upon row of cages of fellow hens. Every night, they try to seek out a comfortable place to roost, but on wire floors, they never find one. They will lay eggs – without being able to satisfy their urge to nest – until they are sent to be slaughtered at just a fraction of their natural lifespans.

Will you help bring about much-needed change for them?

Many thousands of kind-hearted people like you spoke up during the Poultry Code Review, which presented a once-in-a-generation opportunity to free hens from cages. In fact, the community response was the strongest that the Australian Government had ever seen on an animal welfare issue.

Your voice is the reason phasing out cruel cages was agreed upon and now it’s up to state Agriculture Ministers to make it happen. But 12 months on from this historic commitment, we’re yet to see any state government progress getting hens out of cages. Please remind them that drawing a line in the sand on some of the worst animal suffering is long overdue.

Urge your state Agriculture Minister to lock in an end date for cruel battery cages – and well before the distant 2036 deadline.

Real and lasting change starts with you

Thank you for taking this critical action for hens. While improving legislation is vital, it’s important to note that true transformation arises from a shift in our thinking and our choices.

Hens are being bred into a system that values them only for what they produce, instead of who they are – sensitive, inquisitive individuals. Unfortunately, hidden away in Australian factory farms, their plight remains largely unseen by those who might otherwise choose differently.

In the past two decades, consumer choices have already reduced the number of hens in battery cages by 75%. Yet, many are still unaware that products on supermarket shelves, from baked goods to sauces, often contain eggs from caged hens. Ultimately, opting for more compassionate alternatives to eggs is the kindest choice for hens. Your choices and your example are what will truly change their world.
