The Australian Government has introduced legislation to end the cruel live sheep export trade, after more than 60 years of operation.
In her speech tabling the Bill in the Federal Parliament, Minister Catherine King said: “Phasing out this trade marks a considerable step forward for sheep welfare, reflecting our nation’s values of compassion and ethical treatment of animals.”
Decades of investigations shining light on the suffering of sheep at sea and in importing countries – supported by persistent public advocacy – have helped us reach this historic moment. But the legislation still needs to be debated – and voted on.
As expected, the live export lobby (with help from the National Party) have intensified efforts to see this compassionate policy overturned – and they have WA Labor politicians in their sights. It’s important WA Labor Senators feel supported and appreciated – and that they know their constituents strongly support ending live sheep export.
