The Albanese Government has announced that the live sheep export trade will be illegal from May 1, 2028, bringing to and end decades of animal cruelty and suffering – at sea, and in importing countries.
Agriculture Minister Murray Watt’s announcement not only solidifies a Labor election commitment made in 2022 but reflects the wishes of the majority of Australians, including those living in Western Australia – the only state still exporting live sheep by sea.
Importantly, the end of live sheep export will be enshrined in legislation during this parliamentary term.
The phase out end date is based on recommendations from an Independent Panel who met with 2,000+ individuals, held 96 stakeholder meetings and 22 forums, received 800+ submissions and 3,300 survey responses, combined with existing scientific research, evidence and commissioned economic advice.
Despite this, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has pledged to overturn the ban if the Coalition is elected to government in the 2025 Federal election.
