Legislating the phase-out of live sheep exports by sea

21 years after our first investigation revealed the immense suffering of sheep trapped in the trade, legislation to end the live export of sheep by sea has been passed in the federal parliament. Together, we made this happen...

  • 31,481

Our compassionate supporters never gave up, showing up for sheep at rallies and speaking up for them at every opportunity. This year alone, supporters sent 31,481 emails urging the government to end live export cruelty.
  • 76

Since regulations were introduced in 2012, we've lodged 76 legal complaints exposing the unwillingness of exporters to follow the rules, fortifying the political case for live export to end.

Since our efforts to end the trade began, the number of sheep exported live by sea each year has dropped by millions – from 6 million annually, to around 500,000. Thankfully, within the next four years, this number will be zero.
We did it! Live sheep export will end. With the passage of this unprecedented legislation, history has been made. And we are one step closer to that kinder world that awaits us all.

Launching world-first legal action on behalf of pigs

Animals who’ve been categorised as ‘food’ are exempt from the protections that are extended to our companion animals. The gassing of pigs in Australian slaughterhouses is one shocking example of what little protection these animals really have, and why our work on their behalf is so important.

Representing the 12,500 pigs who suffer in gas chambers every single day

Most pigs in Australia spend their final moments gasping for air inside a gas chamber – it’s painful and terrifying, and this year, we argued the case in Victoria’s Supreme Court that it is also illegal. This cruel method of slaughter – now standard practice – should never have been approved. For the past 18 months, we have been working on a legal case on behalf of every pig forced to endure unimaginable fear, hidden from view in a cage at the bottom of a dark chamber. If successful, our case would set a precedent for all animals who suffer behind slaughterhouse walls.

Help give pigs and other animals better protections by supporting our legal work.

Protecting Australian wildlife from being shot for profit or ‘fun’

Despite their ‘protected’ status, wildlife face indiscriminate killing across Australia. Here's how we’ve continued to give these unique animals the protection they deserve.

Helping kangaroos

Advocating for kangaroos remained a key focus of our work for wildlife, as they are sadly the native species killed in the highest numbers each year. 36,730 letters were sent from people around the world urging Adidas to stop using kangaroos to make shoes.

Advocating for ducks

This year, we came closer than ever to finally seeing an end to native duck shooting in Victoria. Shockingly, the Victorian Government made the inexplicable decision to allow duck and quail shooting to continue. 5,998 emails were sent by our supporters urging the Victorian Government to support the duck shooting Inquiry’s key recommendation of a full and permanent ban.

Defending vulnerable dingoes

We launched a first-of-its-kind legal case in the Supreme Court for threatened dingoes in Victoria. A week out from the trial date, the government revoked the ministerial ‘unprotection order’ we were seeking to challenge, protecting one of the most vulnerable dingo populations in the state from being poisoned, trapped or shot. Unfortunately, dingoes in other regions across the state are still exposed to cruelty.

With your help, our efforts will continue to see wildlife respected and protected nationwide.

Sulala Animal Rescue

Animals Australia started supporting the incredible efforts of Sulala Animal Rescue in Gaza three years ago, recognising their extraordinary commitment despite the unfathomable challenges they face. This support continued throughout the last year, with 100% of the proceeds raised through our appeal for Sulala being sent to the team to enable their lifesaving work to continue.

Joining forces for a kinder world

Animals Australia continued collaborating with animal protection allies worldwide through memberships, sponsorships, and funding – and this collaborative approach is proving to have a real impact for animals.

Dog meat now banned in historic ruling

Seven years after Animals Australia’s landmark investigation, the trade and distribution of dog meat in Bali are now illegal. Through our global arm, Animals International, we supported the establishment of Indonesian organisation Sintesia Animalia Indonesia and have continued to assist their tireless work over the years to change hearts, minds, and laws, to transform the lives of dogs on the island.

Thank you for giving so generously to help transform their world

In the face of great challenges, we ‘stay the course’ for animals – because our hearts won’t let us do otherwise.

Financial snapshot.

Animals Australia receives no government funding – every dollar that fuels our campaigns, investigations, legal work, and research comes from our compassionate donors who share our vision of a kinder world for all.

Animals Australia is independently audited every year to ensure transparency and accountability of the generous donations we receive that are channelled into our campaigns and investigations, critical fundraising efforts, and the operational costs required to carry them out on behalf of animals.

Our generous supporters helped animals in Australia, and internationally, throughout the last financial year; shining a light on the suffering of farmed animals, native wildlife, and animals in crises, and inspiring countless individuals to live and eat kindly – the most powerful way to transform the world for animals in need.
