Countless protected native swans and cygnets have been shot in a government-sanctioned mass killing to make way for trout fishing season — and many more are still at risk of being killed.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment in Tasmania has issued a permit to kill hundreds of black swans simply because their habitat is being used for recreational trout fishing by a commercial company.  It’s unclear how many have already been killed, but with shooting imminent in the coming days and weeks, these swans urgently need your help.

Please join us in calling on the Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jo Palmer, to intervene immediately and stop this senseless slaughter of protected native wildlife.

Black swans partner for life. Their young often ride on their parents back for warmth and protection, but in Tasmania they are far from safe.

In shocking revelations earlier this year, media reports uncovered a staggering 6148 native swans – and millions of other iconic native wildlife, including wombats, wallabies and kangaroos – had been killed in the past three years under government-issued ‘property protection’ permits.

With a lack of proper monitoring and regulation in place, and a system that prioritises commercial interests and profit over protected native wildlife, the permit system is a broken one.

Please be a voice for swans and all precious wildlife and call on authorities to immediately halt issuing permits and explore humane approaches, in line with community expectations.

Swans and their cygnets need us to speak up urgently and ask the Tasmanian Government why this profit-driven assault on protected wildlife continues, out of step with the values of most caring people – those who have the power to vote.

Thank you for standing together to be a voice for precious wildlife.
