Kangaroos are some of Australia’s most well-known and treasured native animals – yet every night across this country, they are the victims of a secretive and cruel slaughter…for profit.

This is why Animals Australia is a proud sponsor of World Kangaroo Day, led by our friends at Kangaroos Alive, who are working tirelessly to share the hidden story of these mistreated native animals, and what people the world over can do to help save them.

People across the globe are shocked to learn that the kangaroo is both a treasured Australian icon, and the victim of one of the largest wildlife slaughters in the world.

‘Protections’ are lifted so they can be killed

Despite grave concern from wildlife experts and the Australian public, five Australian states allow legislative wildlife ‘protections’ to be lifted so that kangaroos can be shot under commercial licences, or by landowners with ‘management permits’.

Even after the Black Summer fires destroyed habitats, while rescuers worked tirelessly to save fire-affected kangaroos, governments across Australia continued to allow shooters to kill them.

Due to questionable counting methods that lack transparency, there are fears that official estimates of kangaroo numbers could be hugely inflated – an issue raised in the eye-opening documentary ‘Kangaroo: A Love-Hate Story’.

Stream Kangaroo: A Love-Hate Story or host a screening to support crucial awareness for these incredible animals.

Cruelty is legal and hidden from the public eye

As the killing of kangaroos often occurs in remote locations, effective monitoring of the shooting is nearly impossible.

Shockingly, the relevant laws specifically allow for cruelty like the decapitation and bludgeoning of joeys to death when their mothers have been killed. There are also no statistics available for the number of kangaroos who are wounded by shooters and escape, only to endure long and painful deaths from exposure, injury, or predators.

Current laws allow for shocking cruelty – such as the bludgeoning of joeys when their mothers are shot – and Animals Australia supporters are calling on decision-makers to take action to properly protect them.

Here are 5 ways you can help kangaroos and their joeys today

  1.  Send an email to Adidas, urging the sporting brand to stop using kangaroos to make shoes.
  2. Take the pledge to never buy kangaroo skin or body parts: By refusing to purchase kangaroo meat or products that use kangaroo ‘leather’, you are voting with your consumer dollars for a future where these magnificent animals live free from unnecessary human harm.
  3. View the acclaimed documentary ‘Kangaroo: A Love-Hate Story’ or arrange a screening within your community.
  4. Consider kangaroos when on the road: Driving with caution, particularly in rural areas, can limit the chance of injuring kangaroos and other wildlife. Sadly, accidents can happen – by reporting injured wildlife to your local wildlife rescue, you can help to save them and potentially joeys hidden in their pouches, too.
  5. Donate to our Wildlife Protection Fund, or, if you are in Australia you can ‘adopt’ a plush kangaroo from the Animals Australia Shop!
