An historic Bill to end the live export of sheep by sea has been passed in the Federal parliament. It now progresses to the Upper House where Senators will have the defining vote – and numbers are tight.
Agriculture Minister Murray Watt’s announcement that the live sheep trade will end by 1 May 2028 will bring to an end an industry that has caused immense animal suffering.
The phase out end date is based on recommendations from an Independent Panel who met with 2,000+ individuals, held 96 stakeholder meetings and 22 forums, received 800+ submissions and 3,300 survey responses, combined with existing scientific research, evidence and commissioned economic advice.
Overwhelming support for the Bill – including from those living in Western Australia – was further reinforced in a recent Parliamentary Inquiry where 85% of the 13,000+ submissions called for an end to live sheep export.
Within days, Senators will decide the fate of this Bill – and pro-live export lobbyists are working hard to try to sway as many votes as they can.
It’s crucial that your state Senators know you want them to support the Bill to end live sheep export. Please use the form below to send a brief and polite message of encouragement, reassuring them that the majority of Australians support this compassionate piece of legislation.
