Transforming the food system.

Helping create a food system that is kinder to animals, people, and our planet.

A beautiful hen is held in the arms of a caring person who strokes her gently.

Across decades of animal advocacy and investigations, our work has consistently revealed one truth: most people would never knowingly choose to cause animals to suffer. Yet the way our food system is designed makes it easy to eat in ways that are disconnected from our deepest values — and hard to imagine it being any other way. That’s where our compassionate living initiatives come in…

It doesn’t matter where someone lives, what they believe, or what’s on their plate: the vast majority of people feel an instinctive compassion for other living beings, and a desire not to cause unnecessary harm. But caring about animals and eating in alignment with that care are two very different things. For many of us, our food choices tend to happen on autopilot, shaped by culture, habit, convenience, and a food industry that has spent decades trying to market animal products as the ‘default’.

So it makes sense that the reality behind the production of meat, eggs, dairy, and seafood often comes as a profound shock. Few people realise the sheer scale of suffering involved, or that cows, chickens, sheep, pigs, and fish are excluded from even the most basic legal protections afforded to ‘companion’ animals like cats or dogs.

Legal exemptions leave farmed animals vulnerable to a range of routine practices that cause immense suffering and would be illegal in almost any other context, or if inflicted on a cat or a dog — despite the fact that they share the same capacity to feel joy and happiness, to feel pain and to suffer.

Most people are not actively choosing to support the cruelty hidden behind factory farm or slaughterhouse doors; they’re merely participating in a system they’ve rarely been encouraged to question. Our work in this space bridges the gap between values and action, making it easier for people to align their food choices with the compassion they already feel.

Eating more plant-based meals is the single most profound way that we as individuals can help protect animals, the planet, and our health — all in one fell swoop. And with plant-based eating now firmly in the mainstream, it’s never been easier!

Our advocacy to facilitate and normalise compassionate eating has taken many shapes and forms over the years — but inspiring storytelling, delicious meal ideas, and practical support are always part of the mix.

Below is an overview of our current initiatives, each one a different entry point into the same powerful shift towards a food system that’s kinder for all. And supporting each initiative is our dedicated plant-based food advocacy brand, VegKit.

VegKit: A one-stop destination for living and eating kindly

A stack of the 'Taste for Life' cookbooks.

Putting something tangible in people’s hands (and kitchens)

In 2017, we published an animal-friendly cookbook called Taste for Life, packed with over 100 plant-based recipes celebrating the flavour, comfort and generosity of plant-based cooking.  And Australians were hungry for it! The collection became a bestselling cookbook within its first week of release, quickly requiring a second print to meet demand.

Our free Veg Starter Kit is exactly what it sounds like! A beautifully designed, practical resource to help veg-curious foodies kick-start their plant-based eating journey. This printed, magazine-style booklet is packed with enticing recipes, nutritional guidance, product recommendations, tips for dining out, vouchers for plant-based businesses, and more — all in a format people can flip through, pass along, and return to again and again.

Cooking up a plant-based storm on mainstream TV

Freshly Picked is Australia’s first fully plant-based cooking show, created by Animals Australia and brought to life with the help of our production partners — and it packs serious culinary credibility. Hosted by MasterChef grand-finalist Simon Toohey and airing on Channel 10, the series brings plant-based food into households that might never have gone looking for it, helping hungry viewers across the country discover that mealtimes become instantly more vibrant without animals at the centre of every plate.

The series features an exciting range of guest chefs and tips for plant-based cooking, as well as producer segments that take viewers out into the field to meet the growers and makers behind the ingredients. At its heart, Freshly Picked is a show about sharing delicious, veg-forward food — but the secret ingredient woven throughout is a celebration of the kinder, more sustainable food system we can create with it.

All seasons are available to watch online, and every recipe lives on VegKit, extending the show’s reach long after each episode airs.

Reinventing family recipes with the people you love

We regularly hear that one of the biggest hurdles people face when trying to eat more animal-friendly food is not wanting to give up the comfort meals they already love — or not knowing how to get the family on board. So when we met Nanna Mirella, a sassy 85-year-old home cook with a passion for ‘veganising’ dishes for her granddaughter, we knew her story and culinary wisdom were worth sharing.

Nanna, the star of The Nanna Diaries, sits at a table with her granddaughter as they enjoy a tasty spread including plant-based arepas.

The Nanna Diaries is a six-episode web series in which Nanna Mirella teaches her grandchildren how to make a hand-picked selection of her beloved family recipes — with all the same nostalgic flavours they know and love, just the animal ingredients swapped out for plant-based ones.

The result is a charming series that is as much about connection as it is about cooking. A free recipe booklet available on VegKit has helped deliver Nanna’s cosy, comforting recipes straight into people’s home kitchens — showing that compassion for animals and family traditions can go hand in hand.

Reaching further through partnerships, platforms & presence

Beyond our own programs, we extend our reach through a growing network of collaborations.

As the official Australian partner of Veganuary and a sponsor of No Meat May, we help support hundreds of thousands of people taking their first steps towards change every year. We also sponsor regional events including vegan festivals in Perth & Adelaide — putting our message and stacks of free Veg Starter Kits directly into the hands of attendees.

Our recipes have been featured by major publishers like Taste Magazine and The Australian Women’s Weekly, in seasonal recipe booklets with veggie box delivery service Farmers Pick, and in the social media feeds of food-lovers through collaborations with popular online creators.

By flying the plant-based flag in so many different spaces, from food festivals and mainstream TV to national print titles, social media, documentary screenings, online retailers, and even grocery store shopfronts, we ensure our message keeps finding its way into new hands, new kitchens, and new conversations.

Growing the global kind eating movement — with lasting impact

Everything we do connects back to one simple idea: that the world is kinder when people choose to eat more plants.

Underpinned by evidence and shaped by decades of animal advocacy, these initiatives work together as a cohesive strategy to shift not only individual habits, but also the broader cultural norms, conversations, and food systems that shape what billions of people eat every day.

As more people become curious about plant-based eating, we’re here to walk alongside them and help every step of the way — making animal-friendly choices feel familiar, delicious, and entirely within reach.
