By day, kangaroos feature on tourism ads and delight visitors to Australia. Under the cover of darkness, these native animals are ruthlessly killed for profit, and their joeys – considered ‘worthless’ to the profit-driven industry – are brutally ‘disposed of’ or left to die.

Many people are shocked to discover that the Australian federal government allows for millions of kangaroos to be commercially slaughtered each year.

Even after the devastating 2019-20 Black Summer fires destroyed swathes of native habitats, governments across Australia continued to allow shooters to kill kangaroos – while rescuers worked tirelessly to save those who were affected by the fires.

The commercial killing of kangaroos is the largest slaughter of land-based wildlife in the world. And it’s not just those who are killed to be turned into pet food or shoes who suffer…

Many who are shot escape wounded, and suffer in agony over days or weeks with bullets to the face, neck or body. The joeys of killed mother kangaroos are legally ripped from their mothers’ pouches and decapitated or smacked against a ute tray until they die.

There is nobody monitoring how many joeys are harmed by shooters; though it has been estimated that as many as 440,000 dependent young kangaroos in the states of New South Wales and Queensland alone are either clubbed to death every year, or left to starve after their mothers have been killed.

You can shape a brighter future for kangaroos

Decision-makers in Australia continue to abandon kangaroos to extreme cruelty at the hands of the commercial kangaroo killing industry. Every kangaroo product sold – whether it be dog treats or ‘pet food’, meat sold in restaurants or supermarkets, or skins used to make shoes and other ‘leather‘ products – supports an industry that sees kangaroos and joeys as nothing more than dollar signs.

Pledge to never buy kangaroo products, and send a powerful message to governments and industries that caring people the world over want to see these animals properly protected.

Make a powerful change for kangaroos and their joeys today!
