I am writing to you as someone who cares deeply about South Australia’s wildlife, urging you to endorse the Hon. Tammy Franks' motion for a government inquiry into the killing of kangaroos and wallabies in South Australia.
The scale of suffering caused by commercial and non-commercial shooting is immense, and the need for the government to address it is dire. The existing ‘National Codes of Practice’ are not only impossible to enforce or monitor given the remote locations shooting occurs, but they also specifically allow horrific practices, such as the joeys of shot mothers to be killed by decapitation and bludgeoning.
Ms Franks rightfully questioned the suitability of a national code that permits such brutal treatment of terrified joeys in the year 2024. We cannot allow these cruel practices to continue without scrutiny and reform. Recent national surveys conducted in 2023 have shown a clear majority of Australians oppose the commercial slaughter of kangaroos, recognising both the cruelty involved and the ecological significance of this native species. Most South Australians like me expect native wildlife to be protected, not shot for ‘convenience’ or for profit.
Opposition to killing wildlife for profit is not only growing across the country, but around the world too. In recent years, major sporting brands like Nike, Puma and New Balance have all turned their backs on the commercial kangaroo shooting industry by discontinuing their use of kangaroo 'leather' because it’s cruel and unsustainable. This growing international disapproval raises significant questions about South Australia’s continued participation in such practices.
We are counting on your leadership to ensure a thorough inquiry is conducted to reassess and overhaul the regulations governing the killing of this native species in our state. Your stance on this matter is crucial, and I, along with many of your constituents, look forward to your support in ensuring our kangaroos and wallabies are treated with the respect and care they deserve.
Could you please inform me of your position regarding this proposed inquiry?
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
